The Need for Seed Treatments with Early Planting

Featured Seedsman: Daryl Doty, Iowa

Channel Seedsman Daryl Doty, of Malcom, IA, explains why he thinks all growers should use seed treatments when they plant their soybeans early.

Key Takeaways:

  • The early planting in soybeans, the greater the need for fungicides and insecticides.
  • Seed treatments can help hasten soybean emergence.

If planting early, should all growers use a seed treatment product?

The earlier the planting on soybeans, the more critical it is to have a seed treatment, especially a fungicide treatment. But, it's also critical to have an insecticide on there as well for insects like bean leaf beetle. You typically see a little bit slower emergence and it's more important in those cooler soils to have a fungicide applied in that earlier planting scenario.
