Channel Seedsman Ryan Grable of Troy, Kansas discusses how Gray Leaf Spot spreads from field to field.
Key Takeaways:
- As gray leaf spot over winters on corn stubble, it can develop every year.
- Gray leaf spot reduces the capacity of the plant to produce to its full potential.
How does Gray Leaf Spot spread from field to field?
Gray leaf spot over winters on corn stubble, so it's there nearly every year. Disease triangle, you have to have a pathogen host and the environment. The pathogen's there almost every year. The host is there because we plant corn every year. And it's just a matter of whether or not the environment is suitable for gray leaf spot to grab a hold and take off. Anytime you have a lesion on a leaf whether it's gray leaf spot or any of the other disease, you're reducing the capacity of that plant to produce to its full potential. We try to keep a close eye on that and help our growers make those decisions if there's a need for a fungicide application every year.
